$20,000 - Chicago’s Ambrosia

Gael, grade 7

(from Eat Your Words; Summer 2017; Middle School Writer’s Camp)

Walking down Lake Shore Drive

Viewing the scenery

Watching the sky

A smell of a treat

Wafts over me as I look at the Pier.

Like a cartoon cat

I float down the sidewalk

To the scent.

While this scent lures me

I look around

Seeing the skyscrapers coming out of the ground.

The scent is pulling me into its whirlpool.

I want to find this mysterious treat.

There it is, the smell is so strong

Greater than the strength of Hercules.

I close my eyes before I reach it.

Oh, how beautiful it is

Greater than Helen of Troy

Seeing this cart with the smell wafting

From it.

I see them now

What our city is known for

In culinary excellence

The hot dog, gleaming light

From its meaty skin.

$10,000 - The Importance of Fruits and Vegetables

Robert, Grade 6

(from Eat Your Words; Summer 2017; Middle School Writer’s Camp)

I love to eat fruits and vegetables. I love them because they are healthy, and the taste tells stories, from a humble farm to a leafy orchard to an amazing, tropical island. You must notice the taste and enjoy it or leave it. I love every type of fruit, but I do have a favorite vegetable. It is the great asparagus. I love the bitterness on the top, and how it gets sweeter as it descends into the skin. Always when I eat a stalk, my taste buds crave more. I didn’t like it when I first tried it, but over the years I got to like it more and more. Now, it is perfection. Fruits and vegetables mean something. They mean survival. Humans wouldn’t survive without them. I couldn’t survive without them.

$5,000 - Not Too Sweet

Kyla, Grade 4

(from Eat Your Words; Summer 2016; Workshops)

When I go to other donut shops, there are almost always sweet donuts. I would make maple bacon donuts with bacon flavoring and real bacon inside. I would also make a potsticker donut, because when my friends and I have sleepovers, we have potstickers for dinner. I would also want to make a garlic and herb donut. It would taste and look like a garlic breadstick. My specialty donut would be the donut of the season.

Summer would be the… summer squash donut.

Spring would be the… caprese donut.

Fall would be the… corn casserole donut.

Winter would be the… peppermint donut.
